Eggs in Autumn

As the days grow shorter and the air takes on that crisp autumn feel, life on our little farm begins to shift. It’s not just the gardens that sense the season’s change—our hens do too. After a summer of producing beautiful eggs, they naturally begin to slow down.

Chickens lay eggs in response to daylight, and with fewer hours of sun, their bodies take a gentle pause. Adding to this natural slowdown, many of our hens are also molting—shedding old feathers and growing in fresh new ones to keep them warm through winter. Molting requires a lot of energy, which means egg production temporarily dips even further. For us, it’s both a challenge and a reminder that farming means moving with the rhythm of the seasons, trusting that our flock will bounce back when the days grow longer again.

Some of you may have noticed that this week’s baskets included eggs from Beking’s Poultry Farm. Their hens roam free, producing some of the best eggs we could find to fill all your orders. As our own hens lay fewer eggs, Beking’s helps us keep up with demand—without straying from our values of freshness and sustainability. It feels fitting for this time of year: sharing abundance from another local farm while our own hens enjoy their well-deserved rest. With just a few weeks left of our Farm Baskets and offering Farm Fresh Egg add-ons for the season, every dozen feels like a gift.

We take great pride in caring for our hens, making sure they stay comfortable with cozy bedding, fresh water, and their favourite feed. Some mornings we collect fewer eggs than we’d like—but each one feels extra special. There’s a simple comfort in gathering eggs on a cool, crisp morning, when you can see your breath in the air.

So when you crack open one of our farm-fresh eggs this fall, know that you’re tasting more than nourishment. You’re tasting the season itself—slower, cozier, and a little more mindful.
