In our backyard, we take pride in our pasture-raised chickens that produce the most delicious and nutritious eggs. Our hens roam freely in a spacious enclosure. The enclosure is not so much to keep them in, but rather it is a barrier to keep the foxes and coyotes out. Our chickens use their coop to lay eggs and roost at night but spend most of their time in their outdoor pen where they have dust baths, lay in the sun, forage and roam freely. When we are working around the farm, we will open their gate and let them roam freely in our yard and adjacent pasture. We provide them with a lay mash from our local feed store. It includes wholesome grains and vegetable proteins balanced with minerals and vitamins, nutrient-dense, carefully-balanced formulations that increase egg production and egg shell quality. Additionally, we allow them to forage a natural and varied diet that includes bugs, seeds, and fresh greens.
