From Farm to Pie: Easy Homemade Pumpkin Purée with Your Farm Basket Pumpkin

What can you do with that beautiful pie pumpkin in your farm basket, you ask? Making homemade pumpkin purée is simpler than you might think!

Fresh purée from a sugar pie pumpkin adds a rich, authentic flavour to your holiday pies and other fall treats. Here’s how to make your own in just a few simple steps, with that medium pie pumpkin (sugar pumpkin) in your farm basket:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F
  2. Prepare the pumpkin: Cut the pie pumpkin in half, from stem to base. Scoop out the seeds and stringy bits (save the seeds for roasting if you like!).
  3. Roast the pumpkin: Place the pumpkin halves cut-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or foil. Roast for about 45-60 minutes, or until the flesh is tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  4. Cool and scoop: Let the pumpkin cool slightly. Once it’s cool enough to handle, scoop the soft flesh out of the skin.
  5. Purée: Use a food processor, blender, or even a hand masher to purée the pumpkin until smooth. If the purée is too thick, add a little water to get the right consistency.
  6. Use or store: Use the fresh purée right away for your favorite pumpkin pie recipe, or store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze it in portions for future pies or other pumpkin recipes!

Each medium pie pumpkin yields about 2 cups of purée, perfect for one 9-inch pumpkin pie!

Mmmmmm, Pumpkin pie, the ultimate comfort dessert!

There’s something magical about pumpkin pie in the fall. As the leaves turn and the air becomes crisp, the aroma of a freshly baked pumpkin pie feels like the heart of the season. Pumpkin pie is a timeless tradition that brings everyone together. It’s a sweet reminder of the harvest, warmth, and all the flavours that make this time of year so special.
