A Taste of Fall: Kohlrabi and Apples in This Week’s Farm Basket

As we welcome the crisp, cool days of fall, it’s an exciting time for us! Last week, we took a trip to a local apple orchard to pick the freshest apples for your farm baskets. These sweet, juicy apples are a perfect match for the earthy flavours of our fall kohlrabi, another star vegetable in this week’s share.

At our farm we grow Kohlrabi, a lesser-known but delicious vegetable that is part of the cabbage family. We grow Kohlrabi in the early spring and again in the fall. Its mildly sweet, crunchy texture pairs beautifully with apples, making it a versatile addition to both savoury and sweet dishes. If you’re not familiar with it yet, you’re in for a treat!

This simple, refreshing slaw highlights the best of fall produce, combining crisp apples and crunchy kohlrabi with a tangy vinaigrette. It’s perfect as a side dish or a light lunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium kohlrabi, peeled and julienned

  • 2 medium apples, cored and julienned

  • 1 carrot, peeled and julienned

  • 2 tbsp Aurelius Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tsp honey

  • 1 tsp dijon mustard

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the kohlrabi, apples, and carrot.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, apple cider vinegar, honey, dijon, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour the dressing over the kohlrabi and apple mixture, tossing until evenly coated.
  • Let the slaw sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld, then serve!

Notes

  • Alternatively, try using one apple instead of two; and adding a medium fennel bulb with its fronds to the recipe. Thinly slice the bulb, and chop enough fronds to make 1/4 cup for garnish.
  • If you’re like me (Brennan’s Mum) and your knife skills aren’t quite at Brennan’s level, a mandolin is your best friend—use it to quickly and easily julienne everything!

Not only am I excited to share this simple recipe with you, but I’m also thrilled to include apples from our local orchard in this week’s farm baskets. These apples are grown locally in North Augusta at Hall Apple Orchard and harvested at the peak of ripeness, bringing a little extra sweetness to your fall meals. We hope you enjoy the combination of fresh, local flavours in your basket this week!

Happy cooking and happy fall!
