When the Voles Get There First: The Challenges of Farming

Farming is full of anticipation. We plant our seeds, tend to the soil, and wait patiently for the day when we can finally harvest. But sometimes, just as we’re ready to pick that perfect row of beets, we discover that someone—or something—has beaten us to it.

This weekend, we had our hearts set on harvesting beets from our low garden. The leaves were lush and green, the roots starting to swell just beneath the soil. But when we went to pull them up, we found that the voles had already enjoyed the feast we’d been waiting for. Insert pic of farmer shaking her fist, lol.

It’s frustrating, to say the least. Weeks of care and attention, only to find the evidence of tiny teeth marks on what should have been our bounty. But that’s the reality of farming—sometimes nature has its own plans.

Despite these challenges, we keep going. We’ll try again, implementing new strategies to protect our crops and hoping for a better outcome next time. Farming isn’t just about the successes; it’s about learning from the setbacks, too.

For now, we’ll focus on what we can still harvest and enjoy from our garden. And as for the voles—well, they had their share this time, but they better watch out, we may release the Patterdales!
