As the summer heatwave continues, it’s important to take extra care of your home garden to ensure your plants stay healthy and thriving. Extreme temperatures can stress plants, making them more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Here are some tips to help you manage your garden during this hot spell, inspired by the practices we use in our market garden.

1. Watering Wisely
- Early Morning and Late Evening: Water your plants in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation and give plants time to absorb moisture before the day’s heat sets in.
- Deep Watering: Ensure you are watering deeply to encourage roots to grow deeper into the soil. Shallow watering can cause roots to stay near the surface, making plants more susceptible to heat stress.
- Irrigation Systems: If possible, use drip irrigation systems that deliver water directly to the root zone, minimizing water loss and keeping the foliage dry.
2. Mulching
- Apply a layer of mulch around your plants to help retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool. Organic mulches like straw, wood chips, or compost work well and also improve soil health over time. We use mulch in our shade garden around our Hosta plants and Begonias. It also helps suppress weeds.

3. Shade Protection
- Use shade cloths or row covers to provide temporary relief from the intense sun, especially for young or tender plants. Shade cloths can reduce the temperature by up to 10 degrees, providing a much-needed respite for your plants.
4. Check for Stress Signs
- Keep an eye out for signs of heat stress, such as wilting, yellowing, or leaf drop. Promptly address any issues by adjusting watering schedules or providing additional shade.
5. Healthy Soil Practices
- Ensure your soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Healthy soil can retain moisture better and provide a buffer against extreme temperatures.
How We Beat the Heat in Our Market Garden
In our market garden, we use a combination of strategies to keep our plants healthy during heatwaves:

Irrigation Systems: We rely on efficient drip irrigation systems to deliver water directly to the roots, conserving water and ensuring deep hydration.
We purchased our irrigation system from Dubois Agrinovation Farm equipment & supply in Saint-Remi, QC
Sprinklers: In addition to drip irrigation, we sometimes use sprinklers to help cool newly transplanted vegetables–it helps provide additional moisture and humidity. We use a sprinkler to help our seeds germinate.

Shade Cloths: To protect our more vulnerable crops, we use row covers that provide relief from the scorching sun. When transplanting our succession plants (Lettuce, Kohlrabi and Bok choy) this time of year, we have to use some kind of shade cloth otherwise the hot sun is too hard on them. We purchased our row covers online at Amazon.ca

Regular Monitoring: We constantly monitor our plants for signs of stress and adjust our care routines as needed.

By implementing these tips and practices, you can help your home garden survive and even thrive during the heatwave.
Stay cool, and happy gardening!
